nick in the studio working on 'Blue'

After a childhood spent drawing, painting and modelmaking, Nicholas StHelier gained a degree in Design and Technology/Art at St Johns College, York, specialising in Furniture Design and Printmaking. Upon leaving college he gained employment in various guises including work at Warner Bros Feature Animation's London Studios. When the studios closed after two film projects Nick found work as a video editor in an advertising archive.

Late in 2006 he started experimenting with digital photography which in turn led to the creation of a series of acrylic paintings composed of images derived from still life projects involving plastic flowers, models, toys and various other gaudy trinkets. Over the last couple of years the focus of the work has gradually shifted towards portraiture.

StHelier's method of working combines many different disciplines including traditional drawing and painting, polaroid, digital and pinhole photography and digital image manipulation. The concept of serial transformation underpins everything as compositions are generated from drawing, photography and general sketchbook experimentation, often making many twists and turns before being commited to canvas.
